Anne Grete, Norwegian health minister
Norwegian Health minister Anne Grete Strøm Erichsen is in the country on a five-day official visit. He arrived on Monday this week.
According to a press statement issued yesterday, Erichsen will be exploring about Tanzania’s health system with a special focus on improving the health status of mothers and newborns.
“I’ve been very impressed to learn that Tanzania is on track to achieve the Millennium Development Goal on child health. But more must be done to increase the number of women who give birth under the care of skilled health personnel. This is why, we have piloted a new system whereby health personnel get a bonus for every child birth they attend,” the minister is quoted as saying in the statement.
Erichsen said with increased efforts, Tanzania would also meet the Millennium Development Goal on maternal health.
The minister started her programme in Arusha and was also scheduled to visit Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar. She is accompanied by the Norwegian permanent secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bente Angell-Hansen.
The statement said the Norway-Tanzania Partnership Initiative (NTPI) was launched in 2007 after the dialogue between Norwegian Prime Minister Stoltenberg and President Jakaya Kikwete.
The statement said, the Scandinavian country has since been providing approximately USD8.5m annually to support the country’s health sector.
